Ever since I was a little kid I was obsessed with taking trips and packing bags. My mom tells me that from the age of 5 to 12 I constantly had a bag packed ready to go on vacation or anywhere else at a moment’s notice. In Boy Scouts I was always the guy who had the backpack with the first aid kit, snacks, and just about anything else we could need on our hike. When we went to the beach I was the first kid in the garage packing the sand toys and sun umbrella. Maybe my desire to pack bags comes from a true love organization. Or maybe I pack bags because it helps me feel prepared for any situation I’m going into. Either way I have accumulated a lot of different bag types over the years and none of them are as tough or efficient as the Patagonia Black Hole Duffel Bag.
I got my first Black Hole Duffel for Christmas and from that point on there was no turning back. The next week we took a trip and I was able to fit everything I needed into this bag. It was super tough, mostly waterproof, and had great internal storage compartments. These bags also double as really comfortable backpacks. This feature comes in handy when you have to walk a long distance with them or run to your gate at the airport because you’re running late for your flight.
The Black Hole Duffel Bag comes in 4 sizes. They come in 40L, 55L, 70L, and 100L. I currently have the 55L which is perfect for most trips and everyday use. When I need to travel with ski or bike gear the 100L packs it all without breaking a sweat. This bag is also fully capable of holding your wife’s entire closet in case you want to go on a 2 day trip. My favorite part about these bags is how sturdy they feel. The handles are made out of high-quality nylon webbing and all the seams are reinforced. Because of these reinforcements the bag doesn’t feel like it’s going to fall apart whenever you pick it up.
Overall, these bags are a premium product. While they come at a bit of a premium price, the quality and Patagonia ironclad guarantee (this is Patagonia’s lifetime guarantee of replacement or repair for all their products) make the price worthwhile. I love these bags and recommend anyone that is in the market for a new duffel bag or travel backpack give them a try. Check out the Black Hole Duffel Bag on the Patagonia website.
